What is this study?
The goal of this study is to learn more about what pregnant people and healthcare workers think about health care and services provided during and after pregnancy. This will help us understand where problems occur in healthcare and training. With this information, we want to make a plan to teach different kinds of healthcare workers to work better together and to work well with diverse groups of pregnant people. The goal is to make healthcare systems more trustworthy for pregnant people and new parents.
Who should participate?
To take part in this research study you must be over the age of 18 AND at least one of the following statements should be true:
- You have been pregnant in the past 12 months
- You have worked with at least one pregnant person as a support person, birth worker or health care worker in the past 12 months
If you are younger than 18 years old, or do not meet any of the other criteria, please stop now.
We expect that 400 people will take part in this part of the research study.
What happens if I don’t want to take part?
Taking part in this research study is completely voluntary. You can choose not to be in this research study. You can choose not to answer any question you do not wish to answer. You can also choose to stop taking the survey at any time. Deciding not to be in the research study, now or later, will not affect your ability to receive educational services or medical care at the University of North Carolina, North Carolina A&T University, the University of Maryland, or any other institution affiliated with this study.
What happens if I do take part?
If you agree to take part in this research, we will ask you questions about yourself and about your experiences with healthcare and services related to pregnancy and birth. You can respond in writing, using text to speech, or, in some cases, via recorded audio.
The survey includes the following:
- 2 multiple choice eligibility questions (required)
- 15 multiple choice demographic questions (optional)
- Up to 12 free-response interview questions divided into 4 sections. We ask that you complete at least one of the following four sections (required):
- Part 1: Choosing a Provider
- Part 2: Your Healthcare Team
- Part 3: Safety and Trust
- Part 4: Information, Communication and Technology
Your participation in this study may take between 20 and 60 minutes–depending on how much you would like to share with us.
Will you receive anything for being in this study?
You will be offered a $75 gift card for completing the demographic questions and at least one full section of open-ended questions (each section includes three questions). Any payment provided for participation in this study may be subject to applicable tax withholding obligations.
Are there risks or benefits to participating?
The possible risks to you in taking part in this research are:
- Feeling uncomfortable sharing information about your experiences with reproductive healthcare.
- Having someone else find out that you were in a research
The possible benefits to you of taking part in this research are as follows:
- There is no direct benefit to you.
- The information you share will help researchers to find better ways to train reproductive healthcare workers.
Protecting your identity
You will also be asked to confirm whether you would like the recording to remain confidential, or whether they may be used for future publications or communications about research findings.
Otherwise, to protect your identity as a research subject, your name and contact information will be stored separately from any information that you share during the survey. The researcher(s) will not share your personal information with anyone. In any publication about this research, your name or other private information will not be used. We will redact any identifiable details such as names of medical practices or locations to minimize the chance that anyone will be able to guess your identity based on your responses.
At the end of the survey, you will be asked if you want to be contacted for future surveys related to reproductive health research. If you wish to be contacted, your email address will not be linked to your responses to the survey.
